Tugging at the canvas sack released a plethora of mold spores and dust, triggering a massive sneezing fit. This trip to clear out the basement started as most decluttering trips do: the direct result of not being able to find something. Musty odors clung to everything, and the feeble light bulb hanging by a single wire cast watery light back and forth as it swung around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stupid skateboard wasn\u2019t worth this trouble no matter how much they were going for on eBay. This hateful canvas sack was stuck on something. In no mood to deal with drama from inanimate objects I threw all my weight backwards to loosen it and tumbled back onto the floor when it ripped loose. \u00a0It was from that vantage point the sliver of pale blue green sky appeared. Crawling towards it on my hands and knees, I peered into the impossible crack. \u00a0There should be nothing on the other side of this wall other than dirt. The hidden opening was covered by a rough plank that moved when pushed. It did not reveal the mud and gravel that surrounded the basement, but an alien shot of heaven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cautiously I stuck my head out until I was looking at an ancient roof with curling tiles. Overhead hung a turquoise sky as silent as the grave and just as deep. A myriad of large flying creatures lazily circled the sky like monstrous buzzards. Veering away from this circle, one of the creatures folded its large leathery wings and dove towards me with dizzying speed. Claws tipped with heavy talons were reaching towards my face. And while the sight of those curved onyx spikes was horrifying, that\u2019s not what sent me flailing backwards. It was avoiding the creature’s knowing eyes, so blood red and vicious, that sent me falling back into my basement. Scrambling to pull the plank cover over the hole I screamed as the board rattled from clawed impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
