She moved away from the coffee machine and toward his office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The glass walls\u2014once meant to signal transparency\u2014now felt less like design and more like exposure as she crossed into his space. He rose after her, the gesture reflexive, polite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She paused just outside the doorway, leaving the open office\u2014and HR\u2014behind. Her gaze flicked to the reports on his screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cCompliance?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aloud, he said, \u201cI handle reporting accuracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPerfect.\u201d Already angling back toward the corridor. \u201cI handle people panicking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n She laughed softly, lifted her coffee with both hands, inhaled\u2014the moment itself was something worth tasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The contrast registered then. Not her energy. Her ease. How naturally she inhabited moments\u2014how comfortably she treated what he regarded as purely functional. Transitional. Something to move through, not linger in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He watched her from the doorway, a fraction longer than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nothing inappropriate. Nothing crossed a line.
