\u201cRyojin\u2014give these to him, Sayo.\u201d
That was the night she first came face to face with Ryojin Kagemori\u2014the most dangerous of the Tokugawa\u2019s former samurai. Once trusted with missions that demanded silence and unquestioning obedience, an assassin by necessity rather than desire, he now carried enough truth to expose the shogunate\u2019s atrocities to the newly formed Meiji government.
Her brother, Toshiro, had sacrificed himself under Shigemori\u2019s blade so that she could deliver the damning papers he had stolen from the sealed archives of the Tokugawa shogunate\u2014the very institution he had bled for, year after year. He had held on just long enough for her to reach safety.
Forcing herself not to look back, Sayo had run as fast as her legs would allow, despite her kimono\u2019s long hem tangling around her ankles, despite her sandals slipping with every stride.
When she reached the abandoned shack her brother had sent her to, Ryojin\u2014who had been expecting Toshiro, not her\u2014looked at her with a gaze so intense it burned with both fire and<\/em> grief.
As soon as she handed him the papers, she collapsed, her body giving in after hours of evading Shigemori\u2019s men. Ryojin nursed her back to health and, perhaps out of pity, took her in.
That had been months ago. They had been on the run from Shigemori ever since.
Until that evening.
Ryojin had gone out to the woods to train men for an upcoming battle, and\u2014perhaps by pure chance, perhaps not\u2014Shigemori managed to corner Sayo in a narrow alley on the outskirts of Kyoto.
Having thought herself safe from his grasp, she had been followed by Shigemori\u2019s men on her way back from the market.
\u201cI know you know.\u201d
His voice grated against her ears as she trembled, her back pressed to the stone-cold wall, his blade resting lightly against her throat.
\u201cI won\u2019t kill you now,\u201d he said quietly, \u201cbut I will not hesitate should you fail to bring me those papers.\u201d
\u201cI don\u2019t\u2014\u201d
Shigemori closed the distance between them, pressing the blade closer, his voice low, lethal.
\u201cDon\u2019t lie<\/em> to me.\u201d He lifted her chin roughly, forcing her to meet his gaze. \u201cIf you don\u2019t bring them to me tonight, I\u2019ll have that traitor killed in front of your eyes tomorrow morning.\u201d
\u201cYou wouldn\u2019t dare.\u201d
Shigemori sniggered. \u201cDo you really<\/em> think I do not know what\u2014or rather, who<\/em>\u2014his weakness is, Sayo?\u201d
She swallowed hard.
\u201cI can make him come to me,\u201d he continued, his gaze dragging over her, \u201cgiven the right incentive.\u201d
Her eyes widened. He knew.
\u201cUnless, of course, you care to bring me the documents you delivered.\u201d
No. She couldn\u2019t. She wouldn\u2019t.<\/em>
How could she betray the man she had come to love\u2014the man who had taken her in when she had no one, the man who had sworn to protect her with his very life?
Yet\u2014
How could she let him die?
She clenched her fists.
\u201cYou cannot possibly defeat him.\u201d
Shigemori laughed softly.
\u201cOh, really<\/em>? Is that<\/em> what you think?\u201d He leaned closer, close enough to make her stomach twist. \u201cI\u2019ve recruited the finest assassins the shogunate ever produced\u2014men who have been on your trail for some time now. And foolishly enough,\u201d he murmured, \u201cdear Sayo has been cornered.\u201d
She trembled against the wall, her face drained of colour.
Shigemori stepped back at last.
\u201cTime to decide which side you\u2019re on,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cBetray the man you love\u2026\u201d
He sheathed his katana and turned away.
\u201c\u2026or he dies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
