My dream was slowly being drawn into the same black hole, where all night visions are captured and forever vanish, as my conscious mind took back control. The sweetness I had just been tasting still lingered on my tongue so vividly; hard to believe that the sensation could be erased so easily.
I threw my comforter aside, about to trot off to the bathroom and… froze. What was that? A creak from an old house settling? I knew every damn sound my house uttered. This was different. I waited. Listening.
Again. The sound of movement through the first floor. It paused. Was someone standing at the bottom of the stairs? Impossible. I locked up everything before heading to bed.
I could clearly detect heavy footfalls. Whoever it was, was heading upstairs now.
Without hesitation, I grabbed my phone off the bedside charger and streaked to my ensuite, quietly closing and locking the door before dialing 9-1-1.
As the operator asked, “What’s your emergency?” I opened the window, preparing to climb out onto the roof.
