Intruder

He usually slept soundly throughout the night but tonight he was abruptly awoken by a sound in the house. I might have been breaking glass but he wasn’t sure. Maybe it was just a dream but then he heard foot steps distinctly coming from downstairs. His heart raced. It had to be a breakin. There had been several over the last few months in the neighborhood but he didn’t think he would ever be a target. What could they possibly want of his?

He sat up in bed, debating what he should do. Did he go confront the intruder or just hide and hope they find what they are looking for and leave. He had seen so many bad movies where the would be victim goes to investigate.

Then he heard the foot steps on the stairs. The intruder was coming upstairs. He had to do something.  He looked around the room quickly and saw the baseball bat leaning in the corner of the room. He grabbed it and hide behind the door.

The footsteps were getting closer, coming down the hallway to his bedroom. The the door handle started to turn and the latch opened and the door swung inward.

He jumped out from behind the door and screamed. Get out of my house as he swung the bat. The swing was wild and struck the door frame and then into the door smashing a hole in the door.

The figure on the other side of the door jumped back and called out, “Holy shit, Bill, its me Sam your neighbor.”

Bill recognized the voice and started to recover. “What are you doing in my house in the middle of the night!”

There was a storm and it knocked the power out. A tree on the power lines smashed into your house. I tried calling but no answer. I wanted to make sure you were okay. Come outside and see the damage that it caused. I can’t believe you slept through it.”
