Conflict at work

Jareth was working in the fields with the other farmhands. They were raking hay into windrows. It was hot and sweaty work. He had his shirt off and the sun was baking him like a potato. Then he saw her coming across the field pulling a wagon with a large container.  He had hoped to avoid Leeza after the encounter at the inn. He didn’t want to interfere in the relationship Thomas had with her.

He grabbed his shirt and put it on. She was very persistent in finding him and it was getting annoying. He was going to have to be blunt with her so that she got the message that he wasn’t interested.  Was he though, I can’t deny how she makes me feel but that is just hormones. I can’t ruin my friendship with Thomas and he really likes her.

She smiled and waved as she came closer. “Hi Jareth. I thought you could use a drink. It is hot work out here in the fields. I am sure a refreshing drink would be good.”

He looked at her. There was no avoiding her this time. He had to tell her that he wasn’t interested and that she should stop following him around. But he didn’t want to hurt her feelings either.

“Leeza, I appreciate the water but you have to stop following me around.” He put down the hay fork and wiped the sweat off his face.

Her smile turned to a frown. “I was just trying to be helpful. I don’t want to interfere.”

“But you showed up when I was fixing the fences, and then again when i was feeding the horses. It’s too much. You are Thomas’ girlfriend why are you stalking me?” He was a littel more blunt then he intended to be but it had to be said.

The tears started running down her cheeks and she turned and ran back toward the farmhouse.

Great now I hurt her feelings. Thomas will be mad at me regardless when all i was trying to do was prevent trouble from starting in the first place. I just can’t win.
