Lesson 12 – visit home

They had been dating for a few months but he had never seen her place before today. He was a little nervous. Sometimes how people live makes a huge difference. What if she is a slob or worse yet a hoarder? Then what? He couldn’t go back to living like that.

As they made their way up the walkway to the front door, he was encouraged. The house was nice, small but nice. It was a New England cottage style home, square with a single floor. There were planter boxes on the windows in the front and the plants looked like they were doing well. Another good sign.

She unlocked the front door and turned as she entered. “Well here it is, it’s not much but it’s mine.”

He took a step inside the small house and was struck by the limited amount of furniture. Just a small couch in the living room to the left of the door sitting alone like an island on a sea of hardwood flooring. The walls were all painted white with nothing on them. It was clean but stark and cold in appearance.

This was not at all what he was expecting. Aren’t girls supposed to be good at decorating. There was nothing in this room. No table, no plants, nothing. It was as if she only just moved in.

“How long have you been here?”

“Its been almost two years this month. I couldn’t believe I could afford such a nice place. How do you like it.”

“Well, its very clean.”

She smiled slightly. She could sense the hesitation in his voice. Something was wrong. He didn’t like it.
