Lesson Four: TEB A Dream or A Vision
Selena jerked awake, heart racing as she held her breath. The tension in her throat burned and her skin crawled with itchy skin as she searched the darkness for any movement in her one room apartment. Loosening her muscles, she slowly released the air she had gulped as if she were about to drown.
Her heart still pounded. Her skin alerted to sense any movement of air around her or change in the atmosphere.
There! Was that a disturbance near the clothes closet? A mass of space darker than the grey room? ‘I can’t tell … hard to distinguish anything when the drapes are closed to those streetlights on Piedmont Avenue.’
She didn’t want to move but she was beginning to shiver. ‘Nerves or chills?’ She couldn’t tell but she knew she had to decide a plan of action. Either jump up and run toward what she thought might be collection of evilness or run toward the Blade of Purity and the light switch at the same time.
She shuddered and thought she saw movement. Usually, she could detect the vibe of whatever had invaded her space. Her sensitivities were ever so keen when she had prepared herself for her hands on healing practice, but right now? ‘I was just too deeply asleep. I must’ve left some opening unguarded. A dream. That’s what made me weak.’ That dream of Flynn and the etchings on the wall of that cave. ‘Where have I seen that cave before?’
The darkness moved again and this time Selena focused her eyes on the blade and the light switch. Screaming at the top of her lungs she lunged at the table beside the switch. Her foot tripped over a bunched rug and she sprawled on the floor missing the table and feeling darkness begin to cover her back and buttocks and surround her head. She couldn’t breathe, or see, and the stench made her gag.

Oh Dear, you must tell us, what happened next! Such a beautifully built tension. So human her thoughts drift away towards her dream, towards confusion and insecurity. I love the escalation of tension as she goes for the blade (and the light switch) and darkness still reaches her, like if the two directions (possibilities) merge in one inevitable forward movement of the plot. I’m holding my breath over your cliffhanger. It’s not fair to leave me here without answers—in a good way. Because it means I already care for your character. You managed to build a connection with her in such a short time. This is important, because once the reader cares for your character, they won’t resist your story either. Keep up with great work!
