Susan frowned at the browning guacamole, sniffing daintily at it. Just like Melanie to serve something that gross at a party. If Ed had not insisted on coming tonight, she would have much rather stayed at home. Glancing over at her husband, Susan sucked in a breath to find Melanie practically whispering in his ear. The look on his face told her he was clearly enjoying her attention, and explained why he was so insistent on coming to the gods forsaken party. Grabbing the wine bottle she refilled her glass, moving away from the group she was standing with to get a better view of her husband and Melanie without being seen.
The clingy heifer was still pressed close to Ed, smiling up at him as if he was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Melanie wouldn’t be so impressed if she had to listen to him snore every night, but that was beside the point. She needed to back off of her man and do it quick.
Melanie caught a glimpse of Susan watching her and Ed and shifted away from him slightly. “I think Susan is on to us. We should talk about her surprise birthday party some other time.” Ed nodded, saying her would send her an email from work, because Susan watched his phone like a hawk. Melanie smiled at him and walked away, shooting a furtive glance at Susan. That woman was so possessive and jealous her poor husband couldn’t even plan her a party. Some people.
Such an amazing portrayal of both women that I’m kind of left speechless.
Oh, Susan — the judgmental one. Not only thinking low of Melanie, but also of her own husband, especially in the way she refers to him in her inner thoughts.
That’s exactly why it hits so hard when we arrive in Melanie’s point of view, which feels genuinely pure and well-intentioned. The contrast is striking.
Now I’m genuinely looking forward to the birthday party, curious about Susan. Will she change her mind and regret her prejudices against Melanie? Or will she stay caught in her own looping thoughts, escalating them further — perhaps even twisting the birthday itself into proof that Melanie is trying to get closer to Ed?
I’m curious. You make me curious all the time. 🙂 I love that.
