It was already a hard day. The dog got loose on his morning walk, the car broke down going to work, a new know-it-all hiree to orient, and now the blasted phone call she could have done without, forever!
“Yes, this is Cindy Franks. What can I do for you, officer?”
“This is Officer Bates from the Marvelous City police department. Is your mother Sally Franks?”
“Yes, it is, well, she lives in Marvelous City, so I guess it’s her. Can you describe her to me?”
“She’s probably in her seventies, white hair, has a broken tooth in the front?”
“My mother doesn’t have white hair, she has always said she’d rather die than let someone see her all white headed and she has never had a broken tooth. Are you sure this is my mother?”
“We are pretty sure. One of the nurses here in the ER recognized her as an economics teacher he had in college. Does she live at 234 Barringer St.?”
“Yes, she does. What’s this all about? Is she ok? Is she dead? Did she have a wreck? What?”
“No she’s not dead, but we have a positive ID on the lady we have in the ER by her next door neighbor,Twila, however, we still need to verify it with you.”
“Yes, my mother lives at 234 Barringer St., in Marvelous City. Can you tell me what this is about? It’s probably is my mom.”
“If this is your mother, and since you live so far away I will let you know what is going on.” Officer Bates continued, “she was found outside in the cold about 1045PM, walking around without any clothes on. She was very combative on the street and tried to beat my coworker up. We thought she was drunk or on some kind of drugs and she couldn’t or wouldn’t tell us her name or address, and had no identification. We nearly took her to jail, but then we decided to take her to the emergency room to get her checked out due to her erratic behavior.”
“Did you say the emergency room?”
“Yes,” Officer Bates continued, “the first time she was placed in the ER, between 0130 and 0300, she left her room and left the hospital without anyone seeing her. Since they couldn’t find her, they called the police department and we found her unresponsive in an alley.”
“She was unresponsive?”
