A Jealous Lunch

“Glennie, it’s so great to see you. It’s been forever,” Fran exclaimed, hugging me. True, it had been ages, but that was largely because Fran was always jetting off somewhere.

“I know. Between the kids, helping my father, and all the work I do for his business, there’s just no pause. But you? How old are Tim and Lisa now? They must be so independent if they can manage while you’re traveling all the time.”

I silently wondered if her kids were just spoiled, given anything they desired as a substitute for genuine affection.

Fran smiled. “Well, I’m only away one or two nights a week. Matt’s around, and we make sure to plan fun family outings every weekend.”

“That sounds lovely. My weekends are filled with cooking wholesome meals for my family. I suppose you eat out a lot?”

Fran took a sip of her water and unfolded her napkin. “Not really. We subscribe to those meal delivery kits. They send all the ingredients and the recipes. It takes thirty minutes or less. We’re actually learning a lot—cooking new dishes and exploring different cultures.”

“But I imagine it must be pricey,” I prodded.

Shifting the conversation, Fran asked, “So, what are Beth and Monica up to these days?”

“Well, Beth’s the class president, and Monica recently clinched first in a talent competition. I’m just grateful I’m always there when they need me.”
