Making a decision

Jareth knew that his uncle was hiding something about his parents, but he didn’t know what it was. Every time he asked him, his uncle just played it off as the mysteries of life and gave no real answers. He had a right to know who his parents were and what happened to them.

If his uncle had something that could give him a clue, he had to just find it. As he rifled through the drawers in the desk of his uncle’s room, searching for anything that would provide a clue, he knew it wasn’t right, but it was his uncle’s fault for not being straightforward with him.

All he found in the desk was some old papers about the farm and a few nails. There had to be something more in here somewhere. He moved to the closet. He went through the stacks of clothes and looked for something, anything that would give him more information about his parents. Then he bumped into the wall at the back of the closet, and a loose board fell off the wall. This might be it.

He quickly removed the board and reached inside. There as a large wooden box sitting in the space behind the wall. He had to use both hands to lift if out. It was heavy. What could be in there?

It was locked but he remembered their was a old iron key in the desk drawer that he retrieved. It was the perfect fit and a quick twist opened the lock with a click. He flipped open the lid of the box. There were some old clothes, a green cloak and boots, a dagger and a old book.

There was also a loose document lying on top of the book. It was a letter, the seal of which had been broken, but it looked like a serpent with two torches. He unfolded the letter and held a candle up to it to read it.

Arthur,

I am sorry to hear that you are leaving the society. You have been such a steadfast friend and partner in the work that we are doing to restore the crown to its rightful place. I can understand that this life has been chaotic and dangerous and you are ready for something more sedate but farm life. I never would have pegged you for a farmer.

I hope everything works out for you, and you know that I will always be here for you if you need anything, and I hope the same goes in return.

Signed

Elizabeth.
