Life of the party

As Jareth approached the pub, he heard the raucous laughter and shouts of the celebration within. He was supposed to meet Thomas here for a few drinks, and then he was going to head home. Big crowds were not his cup of tea. He pushed open the door, and the sounds became overwhelming. It was a smack in the face. He almost turned around at that moment, but he had promised Thomas.

It was going to be impossible to find him in this crowd. The room was huge with a fireplace at one end and the bar at the other. There were tables scattered around the room with groups of people drinking and eating.

A group of women gathered by the bar, standing in a close circle, each of them dressed in their finest attire with their hair tied up in various styles. It was clear they were husband-hunting, and he was determined not to be the prey. He had to keep Thomas away from them as well. A pretty face, too, easily swayed Thomas.

Finally, he spotted him over by the fireplace chatting with Leeza. She was the worst of them at locking down a man so that her father would be proud of her. Aggression was an understatement, and it looked like Thomas was hooked.

Jareth proceeded over to Thomas and Leeza, trying to think of a good excuse to get him away from her. As he approached her, he overheard their conversation.

“You are very handsome, Thomas. I bet you would make a girl a fine husband.” as she stroked her fingers down the side of his face.

Thomas was enamoured and couldn’t look away from those big blue eyes and blond hair. Jareth arrived just in time and tapped him on the shoulder, breaking the spell.

“Oh hey Jareth, its about time you got here, the party is half over. I didn’t think that you would show. This is…..”

“I know who Leeza is….we should go check out what Big Jim and Jacob are doing over by the fireplace, I hear that Big Jim has a whopper of a story.”

“You go ahead i will be over in a few minutes.”

Leeza looked relieved to have the interruption ended so she could get back to business. Jareth proceeded over to the table with Big Jiim and Jacob. He tried to keep a eye on Thomas but the number of people milling around and moving from table to table obstructed his view.

His friends cheers as they saw him and clapped him on the back offering him a drink. He eagerly accepted but then turned to try to find Thomas in the crowd. He didn’t see him anywhere.
