Lesson 11. Conversation with actions

“Hey Ben, nice of you to visit me,” Mike was still busy polishing his Damascus cutlass without looking up.
“How do you know it was me coming to your shop without even looking up?” I touched his handiwork on those light armours that he put on display. God they were dusty, does he even bothered to dust them up? “You’re getting sloppy huh?”
“Nope. Not getting sloppy and by your footsteps, heavy on one leg and lighter on the other, who else could it be but you? My little hero who saved the town.” He looked up smiling and placed his latest handiwork on the shelf with colour green. His way of separating useful equipment against those for show. “Selling real equipment to professionals and those pretty decorations for aesthetics purposes.” His words, not mine.

I try to remain neutral in dealing with those in power and usually are rich. Most nobles prefer his ways but a handful preferred mine. At least Megan, the governor fought alongside me against the Undead and then the bandits just fine.”Seriously, who will go straight back to work except you, Mike?” I chuckled.
“You, my friend. The only Mage who scolded the King’s scribe Up Yours! When he suggested that you run alongside with him to safety with him when the zombies came ” He smiled endearingly. “Here, something for you to take on your journey, Archmage of Lion City.” He passed me a newly forged staff, taken from the materials out of the bone dragon he slew at least ten years ago. Nobody, nobody could compare to a dwarven blacksmith who is obsessed with work. It’s funny that he doesn’t drink at all. But was he single at all? He has the money, the roof above his head, the charms of a grumpy dwarf and a huge package for one so short. We compete in who can pee the furthest when I wet the governor’s boots then. She could kill a cougar with just her bare hands, that lovely from afar Barbarian. Then I remembered the way he looked at her during the battle yesterday. “Damn it! Mike, you have the hots for our own governor!” My eyes widened when I realised it now. “Hush now! You want the whole world to know? Shut your god damn mouth, Mage!” He shove the staff into my mouth. Damn he’s still so accurate with his throw!

“Shut what exactly! No goodbye after saving the town again? You know, you are the only Archmage who doesn’t give a damn to the king nor your superiors. Just go wack, wack, wack and bam! Down with the enemies and next! No wonder you are still a virgin at 44 years old!” Meredith kicked the main door open and I swear she is the only one who does so without getting hurt. No wonder she was unharmed, I blame love that make my dear dwarf weak.

One Response to Lesson 11. Conversation with actions

I’m a bit conflicted about this one.

The piece definitely has energy, voice, and charm. I like the character contrast and how their collision defines the social ecosystem.

At the same time, I found myself getting lost among the details. For me, the number of jokes, explanations, and asides crowded the conversational spine.

Because of that, I’m not sure if I’m the right person to offer truly meaningful feedback here. But regardless of personal preferences, I genuinely respect your voice.
