Seeing is believing, prologue

Hi all, this is the prologue to the story i’m working on seeing is believing, I do feel this would work for lesson 1 so wanted to share here. I’ve only shared with a few friends in the past however decided I wanted a more public bit of feedback. It could work for a tipical Saturday evening I feel.

Prologue:

Chase Carpenter was smiling. This had been building up now for days and he was finally going to cross the most dangerous prisoner in the whole of the prison. Chase chuckled to himself at the thought; nobody had ever crossed this guy but Chase was going to be first. After doing the deal with the inmate’s rival and hiding the money in his secure place he strutted down the corridor, whistling away. He sneaked back in to the recreation room while the Rugby match was still in progress and retook his seat. Nobody had noticed his absence which was what he had banked on.

He had been here now for eight years since he was 20 and would soon be released. Due to his repeated disobedience  he’d been refused parole however his sentence would soon be up and he would be released from this shit hole of a place for good.

Chase still remembered his life before coming to prison, before loosing his father and knew his mother would wish him to go back to the way he had been before his father’s death.

Before his world changed.

Before he became a criminal.

Although he would not admit this publicly, part of him had thought about going straight when he got out; he did not ever want to end up in a prison again and secretly was sick of all the risks that being a criminal forced him to take. Firstly there was the risk of being caught – in fact that was the biggest risk of them all, also there were risks such as being killed or injured. He also missed church and his music which he had secretly started taking up again a couple of months a go. He had not realised until he started playing again just how much he’d missed it. He was also attending the prison services every Sunday although he made sure that none of the cool guys were aware of this and he had not told Holly, his mother. He loved his mother dearly but he did not want her to think it was her pet talks that had been getting to him. Secretly it was being in prison that had done the trick. Being in a place where you had to watch your back at all times, where you had to be careful who you trusted, where you were watched continuously by guards. Chase wanted his freedom back but this last deal was just irresistible.

It had all started two years a go when Ken, a disabled prisoner, had been admitted for armed robbery. It had turned out that Ken was not guilty and had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. In fact it was Harvey and his  contacts on the outside who had committed the robbery and Chase had pretended to become friends with Harvey in order to find out the truth. When Chase had anonymously tipped off the guards, Ken was released.

Harvey  had been given an extra 5 years and his other friends who had been involved had also been given long stretches inside. He had never been able to prove that Chase had been the one to grass him up, but he had guessed. From then on Chase had hated the way he ran the prison, bullying other inmates and having the guards in his pocket. Chase was no angel but he did not use under hand tactics in order to get what he wanted. He was just a typical trouble maker trying to get in on the illegal trading that always happened in prisons no matter what the guards did in order to try and clamp down on it. He had made it his mission to cross Harvey before leaving this place and bring him down once and for all.

Jim, who had supplied the drugs for this deal was also keen for Harvey to be brought down, however his motives were not as pure as Chase’s – he wanted complete control of the prison himself but was too much of a coward to take Harvey on directly without help.

As he watched the Rugby match progress he was grinning to himself. He knew Harvey would be pissed off but if his plan worked Harvey would be spending a longer stretch behind bars and in a maximum security prison. Chase knew that the guard would soon be patrolling and would find the stuff in Harvies cell. However Chase did not bank on how much of a coward Jim really was. He had known when he teamed up with him that it could be dangerous but Jim had wanted Harvey brought down as much as Chase did so he had decided to ignore his gut instincts and trust him.

After the Rugby match chase was writing a letter to his mother organising for her next visit when Harvey and his two heavies Bill and Ben entered the room. Bill and Ben were not their real names but as they were always together and hanging around the cool guys doing their heavy work they had been nicknamed accordingly. They were also not that bright so would do anything they were told for a price without asking any questions.

“Well, well, if it is not stupid Carpenter, very silly aren’t we Chase? Trusting that coward Jim to do a deal with you. Did you not think I would find out? It only took a few minutes for us to beat it out of the coward.” Harvey said.

Chase was scared but he had learned long a go never to let it show on his face. He knew that Harvey would get him back and he knew it would be big, however even Chase had not anticipated just how much Harvey would change his life forever.
